Association of professionals or foreigners? The Sudanese revolution on the Internet
In our previous
publication, we have already talked about a suspicious rise in
activity in Sudanese social networks not long before the revolution. Today we
will move forward on the subject.
It is widely known that the Sudanese revolution is being coordinated through social media. However, no
activist has reliable information about the people who schedule and supervise
the rallies.
The names of admins of these
Facebook pages covering the protests are hidden and not mentioned anywhere on
the web. However, an analysis of the pages shows that most of its admins and
active users tend to live abroad, with comments being generated by bots (the
comments are copied word by word).
Furthermore, admins of the
major opposition forces live abroad, too. For instance, the Sudanese Professionals
Association (SPA) is almost exclusively managed by foreigners:
Canadians, British, Americans, Germans and French. There is not a single
Sudanese among the SPA main page’s admins.
It is common to explain this
phenomenon by saying that pages are managed by the Sudanese that left the
country when the crisis broke out. However, no evidence of this exists. On the
contrary, this theory seems doubtful. Because why else is money for the rallies
being raised in the US rather than in Sudan?
